Jumping the Shark? | Gucci FW Boots

Technically, the Americana trend has been around since, well, America. And while there are certainly folks that have been wearing classic Americana garb since the cradle, I dare to hypothesize that it's nowhere near the number of people that wear it today.  Let's call a spade a spade - Americana is the non-trend trend, and like all trends, they're cyclical.  The good thing about style trends though is that, most times, you take the good parts and adopt them into your style going forward.  Does that mean that every shirt you own will be an oxford cloth button down?  Probably not, but you'll certainly have more of them in your closet than you did before and its some of this return to classic staples that are healthy when they endure past the current cycle.

What's fascinating about this trend though is that the flow of it seems reversed.  As illustrated below, European style taking its cues from American style.  That's normally the opposite.  I like my dress shoes Italian and distinctively so.  If I want a boot with American styling, I'll go to Red Wing or Wolverine or a number of other brands.  I wonder what this says when Gucci puts out a shoe so distinctively taking its cues from the Americana trend.  I hope the European brands play the contrarian POV - saying, "We're European - let the Americans make Americana, let us do what we do best and let the trend-chips fall where they may."  Personally, I like my closet to be well-rounded and match my eclectic style.  Sometimes Americana, sometimes more Italian, sometimes British.  I need brands to represent that instead of a homogeneous mix.
P.S. - For the record, yes, this shoe is actually as schizophrenic as my own style and could actually be perfect for me.  An Italian brand making a shoe with Americana influence as well as other European with the brogue details.  But that wasn't my point...
